Zeist's European Restaurant is a converted townhouse, 40-seat eatery adorned with stylish paintings, a colourful mosaic work and warm yellow lighting. The menu of Zeist is not large but decent.
Well, it was another foie gras day. Despite the fact that it has become one of the most controversial foods lately, I can never resist the temptation of this fattened liver, especially when it was said to be the most popular menu here.
An avid foie gras fan can order pan-fried foie gras as an entree (640 baht), which offers two big plump pieces of the silky liver with rock salt and tasty balsamic reduction sauce.
But the trio appetiser featuring seared scallop, duck foie gras and smoked salmon (520 baht) is a great idea of sampling three delicious selections at once. Two sizeable scallops were meaty and naturally sweet while the smoked salmon was delectable. But above all was the foie gras with the to-die-for, melt-in-the-mouth quality and taste.
Apart from the liver, the bird's leg is also a best seller. Duck leg confit with potato gratin and mustard cream sauce (400 baht) offered a perfect dish in which the low-fat poultry were put together with the aromatic, buttery gratin.
If you're fond of lamb, the grilled lamb loin served with saffron risotto, butter vegetable and lamb sauce (650 baht) is recommended. It featured pre-cut, perfectly cooked tender steak on a bed of crunchy saffron risotto.
If you are not thrilled by the controversial poultry or the red meat, there are several delicious seafood choices available. I sampled two seafood dishes from the weekly special menu: tiger prawn with prawn butter and saut้ed spinach (490 baht) and seafood lasagna with squid ink risotto (400 baht). The prawn dish featured two sizeable seared prawn of fresh and chunky quality with, what I'd call, a heavenly fatty prawn puree sauce. The lasagna was equally impressive but with a different delightful personality. The super cheesy dish smoothly combined fish, mussel with squid ink risotto and tasted as delightful as it looked.
For dessert I had apple strudel with warm vanilla sauce (140 baht) and tiramisu (180 baht). The strudel featured light and flaky filo pastry together with the tangy and sweet flavours of the apple and raisin stuffing. While the tiramisu was truly enjoyable because it wasn't too sweet nor liquorish. The restaurant has a limited selection of red wine sold by the bottle. Prices are around 1,250 baht.
If approached from Ekamai, Zeist is approximately 300 metres down the soi on your right. As the restaurant business has so far enjoyed very satisfying feedback, parking is a little bit of a problem especially for dinner with only 10 parking spaces available along the soi, two of which are right in front of the premise. Reservations are recommended for dinner and on weekends.
