Namsan Bongsoode(Beacon Tower) Lighing Ceremony The term"Bongsoo" is a combination of the words"Bong" meaning torchlight and"Soo" meaning smoke. Bongsoo was a communications system used to notify the central government of urgent political and military information (e.g., the approach of enemies, etc.) from the border regions in ancient times. Smoke was used as a signal during the day and firelight at night. It was a much more convenient and rapid messaging method than using a horse or a messenger. With high speed and efficiency, news about local situations or the enemy movements at the border were communicated to the central government. It was lit once at normal time when an enemy appeared, three times when an enemy approached the border, tour times when an enemy invaded the border and five times when a battle with an enemy had begun at the border. Namsan Bongsoodae was established after moving the captial city to Hanyang in the third year of Taejo's reign (1394), during the Joseon Dynasty period, and was used for approximately 500 years untill the year after Kapogyungiang(the national reformation of 1894). From the old name of Namsan. it was sometimes called Mokmyuksan Bongsoodae. It has also been called Gyeong Bongsoodae because of its location in the capital city. It was and important spot as the central Bongsoodae, the destination point for all of the torch lihgts in the country.
