Most tourists may have heard of Ming Tombs, the magnificent imperial tombs of the Ming emperors in Beijing and it is on almost all the Beijing tour itineraries. However, few people know that outside Beijing City there are two Qing imperial mausoleum sites which are very impressive and also on the World Heritage List. To the east of Beijing in Zuihua City is the Eastern Qing Tomb while its counterpart the Western Qing Tomb is located southwest of Beijing. The harmonious integration of the remarkable architecture in a natural environment makes these Qing imperial tombs masterpieces of human creative genius. About 125 kilometers (77 miles) from Beijing, the Eastern Qing Tombs is the largest and most complete one of its kind in China. The designer chose a place against mountains as the tomb site to meet the criteria of geomancy (Feng shui). In ancient China, keeping a harmonious relationship with environment was considered as a way to pursue eternal life. This principle is widely practiced in Chinese architecture. So, imperial rulers ordered the building of a mausoleum in a place with beautiful mountains and waters as their after-life world and designers tried to pursue a harmonious integration of the natural environment and the architectural design.
Built against the southern foot of Mt. Changrui, the site extends 125km (78 miles) from south to north and 20 kilometers (12 miles) from east to west with an area of 2,500 square kilometers (965 square miles). The basic layout followed the structural style of that of the Ming tombs. But unlike the Ming Tombs in Beijing, which has only one scared way, every Qing tomb has its own sacred road with splendid memorial gateways, decorated pillars and pairs of animal statues. The roof tiles and the scale of the structure vary according to who was buried in the tomb. The yellow glaze-tiled roofs are the mausoleums of emperors or empresses; while the ones with green glazed tiles are for concubines. Moreover, the emperor's mausoleum is bigger than that of the empress and the one for concubine is smaller than the tombs for empresses. Among the tombs are, Xiaoling for Emperor Sunzhi, Yuling for Emperor Qianlong and Dingdongling for Empress Dowager Cixi , which are very attractive.
