Somchai Kawtong, the owner of a boutique called KAI, the top designer and leader of Thai fashion industry, has created numerous impression at ELLE Fashion Week in the past, and was very supportive of young designers, which he gave these young designers the opportunity to display their work in the past. He was considered the backbone of Thai fashion industry, and also help pushed Thai fashion industry to the level of International Fashion standard, and in ELLE Fashion Week 2007 Spring & Summer at Central World, he not only brought his collection of summer clothing to show us, but he also present one of his top students, Nuprut Charapok’s design as well.
As one of the leading designers of Thailand, Somchai said ‘As we all knew, this year ELLE Magazine of Thailand has decided to hold ELLE Fashion Week twice a year, similar to International Fashion Week, which was a great opportunity for Thai fashion designers because it will help improve our business sector in the fashion industry. As for most of us that lived in the tropical climate, we still have to design clothing for 2 collections because we are not just designing clothing for Thai people only, but also designing for our oversea clients as well, and this will prove to our competitors that we have the ability to design clothing for 2 seasons. The difference between these 2 collections were the mood of each season, since we lived in a tropical climate, we therefore designed clothing for comfort, but as for the winter collection, we stressed more on the dark colors such as black and gray, which helped to create the winter mood. As for most of us, summer is the time of the year that we dressed casual, t-shirt, jeans seemed appropriate, and a little touched of colors to make a loud statement. I want Thai people to help support Thai designers, please think of it as helping our business sector in the fashion industry.’
