Pura Luhur Batukaru This temple is one of the island's six cardinal temples. It is also called "The Garden Temple" due to its location in the jungle. At stands at the very end of a steep road about halfway up the slopes of towering, 2278 meter-high Mt Batu Karu.
This was the state ancestral temple of the Tabanan court, and each of the shrines represents a different dynastic ancestor. Di Made, ruler of Gelgel between about 1665 and 1686, is represented by a shrine with a 7-tiered roof, and Cokorda Tabanan by one with a 3 tiered roof.
The nearby pond is fed by the river Aa (pronounced "ehe"). In the center of the pond are two pavilions on a little isle, one for the goddess of Lake Tamblingan and one for the Lord of Mt Batu Karu.
The temple was destroyed and rebuilt several times. The most recent renovations came in 1991, at which time the grounds were planted in a more modern style. Despite this rather incongruous modern slant, the temple is still worth a visit, as it has a unique feel surrounded by the jungle, with the mountain rising up behind.
The inner courtyard includes three meru of three, five and seven tiers. These were built to honor the deified kings of Tabanan. Please note that the meru are off limits to temple visitors.
There is a spring fed pool at the temple, with a shrine in the middle dedicated to the goddess of Lake Tamblingan and the god of Mount Batu Karu.
The temple is easy to access and explore. It is off the regular tourist routes and is typically very peaceful and bare of tourists. If you are already exploring Jatilui, you should definitely plan to go visit this temple. Bring a sarong and a temple sash
